Home > Sports Injuries > Athletics Track and Field Broadly comprises the running, jumping and throwing events. The energy requirements for the various events range from anaerobic metabolism for the sprints to the aerobic metabolism for the longer events. While the anaerobic metabolism derives energy from glucose, the aerobic metabolism initially uses triglycerides and muscle glycogen. With prolonged duration the aerobic metabolism starts using the fats preferentially. The problems that are likely to occur with these athletes are related
to that of overuse. The commonest one being that of tendinopathy (tendinitis,
paratendinits, tendinosis, etc). The other overuse problems being those
of stress fractures, strains, entrapment neuropathies and compartment
syndromes. |
